A LIFE DEDICATED TO BEAUTY

Hand mirror frame: Limewood, high relief carving, gold leaf gilded, shiny finish. Artist: Maks Bergant. The mirror features Bergant's recognizable stylized acanthus leaves, in a symmetrical composition surrounding the mirror.

Maks Bergant, a Slovenian woodcarver and sculptor, created an extensive oeuvre in the latter half of the 20th century and is considered the last proponent and innovator of the Baroque tradition in Slovenia.

SEE HIS WORKS

IN PERSON

Bergant’s greatest works remain, as the author liked to say, “permanently exhibited” in churches.

HIS LIFE'S WORK

"A genuine follower, Bergant did not content himself with copying Baroque art; instead, he recreated the tension of its voluminous forms seeking to break out into space as organic growth. In Bergant’s greatest works, it grows to such extravagance that in the context of Slovenian wood-carving production it may at times appear more ‘Baroque’ than the works created in that historical period."
